Sheepskin

What it is and where it comes from

The short answers. The long ones are on our Why Sheepskin page.

Where do the sheepskins come from?

From New Zealand, Tibet and Iceland. Each origin has its own character: dense and silky from New Zealand, long and wavy from Tibet, light and a little wild from Iceland.

Is the sheepskin real?

Yes. Everything we sell is genuine sheepskin, wool, cowhide or leather. Nothing synthetic pretending to be something it is not.

Is the sheepskin ethically sourced?

Our sheepskin is mulesing-free and ethically and sustainably sourced. Sheepskin is a by-product that would otherwise go to waste.

Where are your products made?

The skins are tanned and sewn by workshops we have worked with for years. Every product is then quality checked, stored and shipped from our own warehouse in Hedensted, Denmark.

What is tanning?

Tanning is what turns a raw skin into something soft, durable and lasting. It preserves the leather side so the sheepskin stays supple and does not break down over time.

Are there harmful chemicals in the sheepskin?

Our products are tanned and dyed in line with the EU's chemical rules (REACH). Some products are also OEKO-TEX certified; where that is the case, it says so on the product page.

Is sheepskin safe for children?

Our bear and sheep rugs for children are medically tanned, made for delicate skin, and can be machine washed if needed. As with any soft surface, a baby should not be left to sleep on a sheepskin unsupervised.

Is sheepskin good for people with allergies?

Wool naturally carries lanolin and resists dust and moisture, which is why many people with sensitive skin get on well with it. If you have a known wool or lanolin allergy, check with your doctor first.

Choosing

Which one is right for me?

A little help with wool, colour and size.

Long wool, short wool or curly?

Long wool is the classic: deep, silky and very soft. Short wool curly is springier and more tailored, and forgiving in a busy home. Tibetan and Mongolian skins have long, wavy locks and plenty of movement.

What size sheepskin should I get?

A single skin (around 85–100 cm) suits a chair, a stool or the foot of a bed. A double (160 × 60 cm) works on a bench, a sofa or by the bedside. The quadruple (170 × 110 cm) is a rug for the floor.

Which colour should I choose?

Natural shades such as ivory, linen and taupe go with almost everything. Dyed colours make more of a statement. Each colour has its own photo on the product page, so pick the one you keep coming back to.

Will the colour fade in the sun?

Strong, direct sunlight can fade dyed sheepskin over time. Natural white and ivory are more resistant. If your room gets a lot of sun, choose a natural shade or move the sheepskin around now and then.

Will mine look exactly like the photo?

Very close, but never identical. Sheepskin, cowhide and leather are natural materials, so shape, size, curl and shade vary a little from piece to piece. Cowhide markings are always one of a kind.

Do the cushions come with a filling?

Yes. Our cushions are delivered with an inner cushion, so they are ready to use. The cover has a hidden zipper.

Care

Looking after it

Easier than you think.

How do I clean my sheepskin?

Shake it, air it and brush it now and then. Blot spills straight away with a clean, damp cloth; dab, never rub. That is most of the cleaning a sheepskin will ever need.

Can I wash it?

We do not recommend washing sheepskin. Washing can make the leather side stiff and change the feel of the wool. If it really needs more than a spot clean, take it to a cleaner with experience in sheepskin. The exception is our children's rugs, which are medically tanned and can be machine washed.

Should I brush my sheepskin?

Yes, for long wool. A wide-toothed brush lifts the pile and brings it back to life. Brush gently, and let Tibetan curls stay curly.

My new sheepskin sheds a little. Is that normal?

Yes. A new sheepskin can lose a few loose fibres in the first weeks. A good shake and a light brush is all it takes, and it soon settles.

Can I use it outdoors?

Absolutely. Bring it inside overnight and when it rains, and let it dry naturally, away from radiators and direct sun, if it gets damp.

How do I care for cowhide, leather and mohair?

Vacuum cowhide in the direction of the hair and wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Calf leather likes a soft, dry cloth and now and then a neutral leather conditioner. Air mohair throws often and follow the care label.
